The third grade class has been working very hard at learning how to play the recorder. They are becoming comfortable with three notes (G, A and B) and simple rhythms. We recently completed a small project on the form of "theme and variations" using a piece by Lucien Cailliet titled "Variations on Pop! Goes the Weasel." This piece has five variations based on the theme "Pop! Goes the Weasel." The classes were separated into groups and each group had to act out their assigned variation. Both classes did a super job! They will be studying a few other forms and styles of music in addition to continuing to work on the keyboard instruments. Seventh Grade Handbells This year in seventh grade has been full of wonderful music! Learning how to read music through performing on an English Handbell has been the focus of the class. This class performed at the Winter Concert and did a phenomenal job. They are currently working on a piece by Mozart called "Arietta" as well as a piece called "Song of Reflection." The class has been introduced to more advanced music vocabulary and symbols such as accidentals, crescendos and decrescendos, staccato and legato, and much more! They have also learned some fundamental handbell performance techniques. Eighth Grade General Music This class has been working on reviewing their music reading and performance skills through playing simple to intermediate melodies and identifying and performing scales as well as more advanced musical directions such as D.C. al Fine, Repeat signs, first and second endings, D.S. al Coda, etc. They will continue to refine these skills throughout the remainder of the school year. In addition, they will be creating animations to musical selections which will be performed at our spring concert in May!
