Notes from the Nurse:

Walking Club:

This club started last spring.  Students can walk or run during recess on a quarter mile path.  Each time they travel the path, they get a stick from a parent volunteer.  At the end of recess, their progress is charted.   Certificates are given to the students when they have reached 3 miles.  At 5 miles, they are given a small foot which can be put on their shoelace or a chain on their backpack.  There are more prizes with every 5 miles walked.  We would like to continue this club during the first and last marking periods when the weather is warm and students can be outdoors.  This is an option for students to do to get exercise, talk or compete with friends and learn a healthy habit for life!  You can encourage your students to walk – please have them wear sneakers and they may carry water bottles on hot days.

Health Insurance for children:

Statistics have shown that having health insurance keeps children well and results in improved attendance in school.  N.J. Kids Plus provides health insurance for children.  If you or someone you know doesn’t have health insurance for their children, please call the following number for information about eligibility: 1-800-701-0710.

Most recent immunization requirement for school entrance:

The NJ state Health Department requires that all children born after January 1, 1998 must have one dose of the Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine, on or after their first birthday, prior to entry into the school system, if they have not had the disease.

If you have any questions concerning this please call my office-908 459 4687.

Health Office information:

Throat cultures to test for Strep throat can be done by the nurse at a cost of $10.

Children should be tested for Strep throat if they have been complaining of a bad sore throat for 2 days or if they have a sore throat with a fever.

If Strep throat goes untreated it might be followed by Rheumatic fever.  Rheumatic fever most frequently affects children between 5 and 15 years of age.  Rheumatic fever is an inflammation that may affect many parts of the body- the heart, joints, brain, or skin.  Damage to the heart may be permanent, while the other effects are temporary.  Damage to the heart may disappear or persist.

The Fluoride Rinse Program is in progress for the students in grades K-4.

The use of a school-based fluoride mouth rinse program is an accepted method by which tooth decay can be reduced an average of 35%.  In N.J., the weekly fluoride mouth rinse program began in 1981.  It is endorsed by the American Dental Association, the New Jersey Dental Association and the American School Health Association.

Health Class News

During this first marking period the 5TH grade is having health class. Relationships such as family and friends are very important.  We did lessons on how these relationships affect us and how to improve them. The students are now studying the Body Systems.  They have learned about the structure and function of the Eyes, Ears and Skeletal System.  The 5th grade health project is to create 1 body system.  Each student was assigned to be part of a group and study one of the major systems.  As a group, they will create this system on poster board using materials brought in from home such as Styrofoam, plastic or construction paper.  Later, they will do a presentation of the system to the rest of the class.

The 5th grade will also be studying :
