Notes from the Nurse

Health Insurance for children :

Statistics have shown that having health insurance keeps children well and results in improved attendance in school.  N.J. Family Care provides health insurance for children.  If you or someone you know doesn’t have health insurance for their children, please call the following number for information about eligibility: 1-800-701-0710.

 New requirements for Immunizations :

The requirement for preschoolers to have the Seasonal Flu vaccine for 2009-10 was temporarily suspended due to limited availability of the vaccine.  However the Department of Health still recommends that preschoolers receive this vaccine and advises parents to check with their private physicians as to availability.

Children born after January 1, 1997 and enrolled in grade six or transferring into a NJ school from another state or country will be required to receive a booster dose of the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccine as well as one dose of meningococcal vaccine

Please discuss this with your private physician.  .

  The Fluoride Rinse Program
started  the beginning of October for grades K-4.

The use of a school-based fluoride mouth rinse program is an accepted method by which tooth decay can be reduced an average of 35%.  In N.J., the weekly fluoride mouth rinse program began in 1981.  It is endorsed by the American Dental Association, the New Jersey Dental Association and the American School Health Association.

Forms were sent home the beginning of the school year but you may add your child to this program any time by writing a letter of permission.
