Second Grade

Classroom Highlights

Mrs. Dorsey Latza

The “second grade stars” are off to a sensational start! They have outstanding enthusiasm and a very strong work ethic.

We use our ever-improving reading and writing skills in all of our subjects throughout the day. In our plant journals, we describe and measure the seedlings in the classroom Grow-Lab. We also keep a record of the outdoor bulbs that were planted in October. In our science weather unit we have been both reading and writing paragraphs about how to make parachutes, wind socks, and streamers (which we tied to the playground fence before we had gale-force winds). Students take turns giving a daily weather report with a microphone. The class records this information and makes a graph on the computer using Excel. The final project for this theme will be making wind chimes with a personal touch.

During our study of Columbus the class read, sang, and performed sailor chants for the fifth grade. The 5th grade sang Halloween songs to us. Our Halloween celebration included a Food Pyramid Party.  We have been eating healthy snacks all year so it seemed like a good idea to share them. Each team selected a food group, made posters, and typed the menu. The variety of food was amazing and everyone tasted something new!

For Veterans Day we sent thank you letters and drawings to any relatives that had been in the service. We are still receiving thank-you notes from many grandpas, uncles, and a dad.

In math we have many challenging activities. We start with warm-up exercises like counting, telling time, measuring, and counting money. Our lessons include using patterns, estimating (at the end of the month we eat the contents of our estimation jar), and writing word problems.

Our next science theme will be space. In social studies we will be learning about Native Americans and then onto map work. Future authors in reading include David Weisner and Tomie de Paola. We are extending the time spent on Peggy Parish as everyone is very captivated by her famous character, Amelia Bedelia.

Each day passes by so quickly that one of our second graders says, ”Time sure flies when you’re having fun!”
